Although modern power systems are considerably more resilient and better performing than the networks of past decades, it is a fact that overhead lines, fittings and apparatus do occasionally fail, sometimes catastrophically. Regardless of the prevailing weather conditions, common failure modes often create arcing and/or heating capable of igniting combustible material. Clearly in times of extended drought the risk of igniting a major bushfire which threatens life or property is one which cannot be underestimated.
